A Spiritual Experiment
Here it comes - that annual day of reflection on what I did wrong this past year. We are supposed to fast all day long, but I could never go beyond 3 p.m. If I cut out candy, I consider it a success.
Yom Kippur is a big deal in the Bible. An elaborate ritual of blood-sprinkling and goat-releasing is meant to cleanse our sins.
According to tradition, it is on Yom Kippur that God decides each person’s fate, so Jews are encouraged to make amends and ask forgiveness for sins committed during the past year. The holiday is observed with a 25-hour fast and a special religious service. Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah are known as Judaism’s “High Holy Days.”
The big news about Yom Kippur this year is I am going to turn off all electronic devices all day long as another kind of fast.
