Ripe For the Picking

Fragile. The one word used to describe the 19-year-olds that Larry Ray targeted with his initial charm. His lies about important jobs, important friends and government secrets weren’t laughed at by them, as a more experienced adult would have done.

Larry Ray moved into the dorms at Sarah Lawrence College directly from prison, staying with his daughter who was going to that school. The other kids thought it was OK. Of course they did. Nineteen-year-olds don’t think they are naive and vulnerable.

Sarah Lawrence College is a good school. Its student are smart. That didn’t protect them at all.

Victim-blaming is a comfort because it gives an illusion of control. No one wants to think that they can be manipulated to this degree because of emotional vulnerability. Sadly, that is the only reason it happens.
