So much online content is photogenic people giving off-the-cuff opinions on the news of the day with no knowledge on the subject at all. The hosts of Breaking Points mock the threats to storm the Capitol, until it happens. Matt Taibbi and Katie Halper laugh at the suggestions that Russia will invade the Ukraine, until it does. I really strive for something different.
When I imagine myself with a top-rated YouTube show, or Twitter account, or Substack newsletter, there’s a plush studio reminiscent of a Bolivian soap opera set. I loll on the leather sofa, filing my nails while fielding calls from political and thought leaders. We gossip about Nancy Pelosi’s latest manicure. I debate Alex Jones about frogs turning gay. I am in the club.
There’s one thing that tanks my fantasy of philosopher success: I really don’t know enough to speak on most subjects.
