For eighteen months it has been name-calling about freedom and intelligence. Now it’s complaining that workers are not going back to work. Some news articles moan about businesses shutting down due to lack of workers. To read these articles, you would think that it was a mystery.

It isn’t.

People have changed their minds about what they want, and can see what isn’t there. No job security carrot exists, and it was never there. A salary that barely pays the bills, or doesn’t, is just not worth the expense of having. It would be better to change our lifestyles by living with family members or moving to a cheaper location than to stay at a job that can go away in a second and doesn’t pay enough to give us what we now value: time and peacefulness.

There’s been a profound shift in American values. We have been forced into a life where a job is not the central way to view ourselves. And what do you know - we prefer it.
