Twitter is the graveyard of many careers. One wrong statement, and that is it for you. Professors have resigned in disgrace and comedians has lost sponsors. It can also be warranted, like expressing admiration for someone linked to the death of 260 Americans.
Nevertheless, so much serious discourse is done through 240 characters on Twitter. Politicians announce new bills, insult rivals and post photos trying to seem a young-ish 75. News stories report on tweets every day. Remember the previous post about how most people aren’t tweeting at all? Somehow this medium has drained the thought and reflection out of important conversations as a nation.
So much of our political dialogue is idea-free. It is a constant cry of “I hate you!’ and “you should hate them too!” The irrational attachment reminds me of sports fans and their feelings about their team, or another city’s. People will root for a team simply because it opposes a team they hate. And I mean REALLY hate.
