If someone regales you with stories of being on a secret mission for the government, or that they are doing such-and-such and not to tell anyone because it is classified, THEY ARE LYING.
I know this because secret agents DON’T TELL PEOPLE THEY ARE SECRET AGENTS!!!
It should seem obvious, but I have heard so many stories of people talked into all manner of nonsense because they believed someone who said this kind of lie.
What brought this to mind was the Sarah Lawrence pimp. He told those naive kids that he was working for the government and they believed him.
A security clearance only means you lead a boring life. Manipulators lie about it because they want people to think it imbues them with some kind of secret powers. I blame television and movies for this problem.
One of the worst - although a good show - is Burn Notice. Let’s do an analysis:
secret helicopters swooping all over the place
regular explosions in a warehouse district
lots of dead people
car fires about once a month.
