Name Repetition in a Conversation

But Why?

Have you ever had anyone repeat your name again and again in a conversation? Usually salespeople will do this, but it will happen in social situations, too. When introduced to someone online, too. “Christine Christine Christine Christine” has been typed at me more than once.

Sales seminars teach that people love the sound of their own name. “Say their name over and over again,” salespeople are taught. This differs from people trying to memorize your name, where they say your name about three times in a conversation after just meeting you.

Some feel it will give you power over the person, to force the speaker into the center of the target’s attention, repeatedly. It’s like they are tugging at an invisible leash to direct your mind towards them, in case you’d rather think about lunch or when will this idiot shut up.
