Leaving radicalism is harder than leaving fascism, it seems. There’s a phenomenon of side-switching, where a radical goes from one end of the political spectrum to its opposite. That’s why neo-Nazis will become extremist Muslims, and vice versa. Yup, that’s a thing.
What makes people stay extremist rather than join the local Democrats Club? Hatred of the government. If all that cross burning aggravates your asthma and the guys just won’t use solar lights instead, it can lead to bitter disillusionment. Not just with the group - but with the whole ideology.
