A Catholic diocese in Sicily has been forced to apologize for one of its bishops telling children in the congregation that there is no Santa Claus.

While complaining about consumerism, and the commercialization of Christmas in general, the Bishop let loose:

… after its bishop claimed to a church group, including children, that Santa Claus wasn’t real and that his red suit was created by the Coca-Cola Co. to sell drinks.

What timing! If there was any time when you wanted to have “the Santa conversation” with your children, it is two weeks before Christmas, right?

The apology wasn’t so hot, either.

“I express regret for this statement that has led to disappointment in the little ones,” wrote the Rev. Allessandro Paolino, the diocese communications director.

Not, “sorry I ruined your Christmas” or “I made a mistake” or anything.

Of course, the Bishop in question isn’t in the United States. Perhaps then he could complain about Christmas tweets showing Santa getting a gun permit, as sent out…
