You’ve heard it before: don’t make any decisions for a year after the death of your spouse, getting sober or a divorce. That’s because you are especially vulnerable, and vulnerable people make decisions that they otherwise would not. They get taken advantage of by people seeking money or a romantic hostage, or worse.
Predators look for people who are weak. And if you aren’t weak, you can be made that way. That is why control of food, rest and social contacts is used by cults and abusive partners.
Consider frequent rules of cult-like groups:
constant activity replacing sleep,
diet restrictions,
disconnection from friends and family not in the group,
living together.
NXIVM relied on exhaustion by keeping its members awake all night, every night through “readiness checks” by text. When a member got a text, they had to respond right away that they were ready. If they didn’t, they were given a punishment. The tired mind doesn’t have the ability to do critical thinking.
